Genma Lab Location and Route Guide

The Genma Lab sits beneath the eastern district of Kyoto's twisted capital, reached through a three-zone route — the Ruined Merchant Quarter, the Flooded Undercroft, and Dokyo's Antechamber — capped by a sealed door that only opens on a full Oni Gauntlet soul charge.

QUICK ANSWER

The short answer

The Genma Lab sits beneath the eastern district of Kyoto's twisted capital, and the approach is a three-zone route: the Ruined Merchant Quarter, the Flooded Undercroft, and Dokyo's Antechamber. Take the Eye Awakening with you — it reveals the shortcut past the second tripwire in the quarter — and expect the sealed lab door to open only on a full Oni Gauntlet soul charge. Your map does not label the lab until you touch the broken shrine at the far end of the undercroft; before that, the area simply reads as 'unexplored.' A first clear averages 25-35 minutes per the walkthrough, dropping under 10 once you know the route and skip optional fights. Do not leave the undercroft without the Oni Fragment from its Rasho Gan — it is the only genuinely missable item on the path.

The approach

Three zones from the Merchant Quarter to the lab door

1. Ruined Merchant QuarterCollapsed gate (broken lantern) to the well-house ladderPlaza fight with 3 Genma Soldiers + 1 Archer; two scaffolding tripwire trapsKill the archer first; the second tripwire hides behind crates (pressure plate); do not jump down the well — use the winch bucket platform
2. Flooded UndercroftBucket descent to the broken shrineWaist-deep water slows rolls and sprints; invisible tripwires in the water; three chambers; false floorThe false-floor pit holds 2 Genma Spiders you can climb out of (no reload needed); interacting with the shrine is what lights the map
3. Dokyo's AntechamberBehind the shrine to the sealed lab doorTwo waves: 4 Genma Puppets in a diamond, then a platform-triggered Rasho Gan + 2 Puppets; lightning chains through waterFight the Rasho Gan from the raised platform so ground lightning misses; the door needs a full Oni Gauntlet charge

Requirements

Awakenings and the soul-charge door

  • Eye Awakening — required: it reveals the hidden shortcut that bypasses the quarter's second tripwire; without it you detour through a side street and fight 2 extra Genma Soldiers.
  • Arm Awakening — optional: smashes the antechamber's left niche railing for 1 Medicine and a few souls.
  • Leg Awakening — situational: the wiki recommends it for antechamber platforms and gaps, though the loadout table only lists Eye and Arm.
  • Sealed door — needs a 100% soul charge. Break all four glowing urns in the side alcoves at roughly 20% of the gauge each; they refund about 150 red souls apiece, so the full break nets a surplus.

Hazards

Traps, forced fights, and fights you can skip

The quarter's scaffolding hides two tripwire traps; the second is the sneaky one, triggered by a pressure plate concealed behind crates. In the undercroft, waist-deep water slows your dodge rolls, invisible tripwires sit under the surface, and the second chamber's false floor collapses when you walk across the center — dropping you into a pit with two Genma Spiders and no easy way out, so climb rather than reloading.

Combat is mostly skippable once you know the route — the plaza fight, the Puppet waves, and the Rasho Gan are the forced encounters. The Rasho Gan punishes greed: a single Issen counter on its melee swing breaks its posture, and the follow-up Break Issen dismembers it for a large soul payout.

Loot

Route loot and the one truly missable item

  • Oni Fragment — dropped by the Flooded Undercroft Rasho Gan (300 souls plus the fragment); one of only three fragments before the lab, used for a permanent Oni Forge upgrade.
  • The Oni Fragment is the only genuinely missable item on the route: if you defeat the Rasho Gan and leave the chamber without collecting it, it disappears and you must wait for New Game Plus.
  • Side loot: breakable-wall caches in the quarter, corpse loot on the undercroft's eastern staircase, Medicine behind the antechamber's Arm-smashed niche.
  • Skip advice: sprinting through the undercroft triggers every tripwire in sequence; entering the antechamber with a half-charged gauntlet strands you at the sealed door mid-wave.

Checklist

The five mistakes that cost runs

  • Skipping the broken-shrine interaction — the map never labels the lab, and you lose your bearings.
  • Fighting the Rasho Gan in deep water, where dodges are sluggish and lightning chains.
  • Wasting a Break Issen on Genma Puppets instead of saving it for the Rasho Gan.
  • Ignoring the urn railings and arriving at the sealed door with an empty gauge.
  • Reloading after the false-floor pit — the two Genma Spiders are climbable and the reload wastes your checkpoint position.
