The short answer
Onimusha: Way of the Sword's main campaign contains 18 boss fights, all replayable from the Boss Rematch sub-menu of the Practice Ground. Nearly every boss runs on the same loop — deflect or counter with Issen to deplete stamina, then absorb souls — and two universal tells carry through the whole game: blue-glow attacks (usually grabs) are answered with a well-timed circle-button counter, while white-glow attacks can only be parried or deflected. Carnage difficulty unlocks after clearing the game once, and beating it earns the True Onimusha trophy; clearing every boss on every difficulty in Boss Rematch earns Glutton for Punishment. By far the hardest fight is the final boss, Minamoto no Yoshitsune (PowerPyx rates him 8.5/10, a wide margin over the second-toughest, Altered Sasaki Ganryu at 7/10) — bring the recommended consumable loadout and ration it for the back half of phase two and all of phase three.

Core loop
One loop beats almost every boss
Almost all bosses follow a single pattern: deflect or counter with Issen, deplete their stamina bar, siphon their souls, repeat. Two universal attack tells save you from learning each boss from scratch: blue-glow attacks — usually grabs — are answered with a well-timed circle-button counter, and white-glow attacks can only be parried or deflected, never dodged or counter-attacked through.
The defensive loop feeds the offense: every parry gradually fills the Blazing Gauge, and once full, Blazing State deals more damage and improves the odds of blue souls dropping. Blue souls power Oni Armaments, which generate purple souls, which in turn build the Oni Awakening gauge.
First playthrough advice from the source guide: play on Action (Medium) with Action Prompts turned off — they are disabled automatically on Carnage anyway, and they tell you which button to press but not when, and that timing is the whole game.
All 18
Every main boss at a glance
| # | Boss | Difficulty | Core tactic |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Byakue | 2.5/10 | Deflect his axe swings, dodge when he is not swinging; counter the blue-glow talisman sweep with circle |
| 2 | Byakue (Enhanced) | 3/10 | Below 50% HP his axe wraps in Malice: jump the ground slam and stay out of the Malice pools |
| 3 | Dohatsu-ten | 3.5/10 | Perfect-dodge or block the kicks; break guard with triangle+circle; white-glow 'No escape' attack is parry-only; deflect the sword energy back; enhanced phase adds teleport combos |
| 4 | Dohatsu-ten (Enhanced) | 3.5/10 | Same as #3 but pulls enhanced-phase moves from the start |
| 5 | Nue (Blue) & Nue (Red) | 3/10 | Two beasts: drop the lock-on and read with a free camera; triangle+circle when tails guard faces; deflect charged tail orbs past half HP |
| 6 | Sasaki Ganryu | 3.5/10 | The 'real' first boss; every move is telegraphed — dodge or Issen the jump slam; circle-counter the blue-glow grab |
| 7 | Sasaki Ganryu (Altered) | 7/10 | The game's second-hardest; two phases with separate HP bars; shoot Gioh with the Oni bow when she feeds Ganryu red flowers; watch for the deadly white-glow flurry when Gioh coats the blade in Malice |
| 8 | Daidara | 3/10 | Slow armored giant — nearly everything is deflectable; grab blue souls first or he siphons them and powers up; red belly means enhanced; watch the licked-hammer sweep |
| 9 | Rasho-gan | 4/10 | Use Oni Vision to find and shoot the binding cord; deflect Malice orbs and shoot the big bubbles with the bow; precise counter on grabs; throws trees when enhanced |
| 10 | Greater Nue | 5.5/10 | Opens with a white-glow tail sweep that must be deflected or parried, into a blockable claw; phase 2 adds lightning and sky strikes (position only); circle-counter the bug grab from its mouth |
| 11 | Benkei | 3/10 | Strip the armor piece by piece using red soul points after posture breaks; save Issen for the jump slam; phase 2 adds flaming back-gear, thrusts, and a twin-spear white-glow move |
| 12 | Benkei (Fully Armed) | 5/10 | Phase 1 already uses the old phase-2 moveset; the cannon toss lands in cracked fire ground that explodes — time the jump; deflect knives back, dodge the spinning axe; circle+left-stick for the grab; the shoulder cannon demands an Oni bow shot on Carnage |
| 13 | Ifuu | 4/10 | Twin-blade giant with a back air-sac: deflect wind blades; dodge the blue-glow aerial grab; phase 2 sucks you in — shoot the balloon on its back; expect the suck after Malice wraps its weapon |
| 14 | Burai | 5/10 | Thunder hammer giant: sidestep ground orb fields, hit the exposed-eye window for blue souls, dodge the cross lightning; learn the phase-2 out-of-frame leap-to-thunder-slam rhythm; the raised right leg is a kick tell |
| 15 | Ifuu & Burai | 6/10 | Duo fight: no lock-on, shave both HP bars evenly; one posture break near the other damages both; 'Let's end this!' is the double-charge cue; the phase-2 storm combo (lightning, wind, double dive) needs precise deflects on Carnage |
| 16 | Shuten Doji | 5.5/10 | Regenerates health all fight — keep attacking; fire element, so bring fire resistance; dodge or Issen the bottle slams; bow-interrupt the flame breath; phase 2's severed head adds a blue-glow charge and balloon head — shoot it |
| 17 | Dokyo | 2.5/10 | Chase-style mechanic fight: deflect spike balls, stand between the arquebus towers, bow the gold-circle balloon, Oni Vision the clone grid for the golden real body, lure mask bombs behind her; phase 2's meteor = hide behind the only uncracked rock |
| 18 | Minamoto no Yoshitsune | 8.5/10 | Final boss and the game's hardest, longest fight; three phases; phase 3 is damageable only during your own Oni Awakening — see the dedicated prep loadout below |
Trouble spots
The two fights that demand more
Altered Sasaki Ganryu (7/10) is the campaign's difficulty spike. It runs two phases with independent HP bars and pulls in the partner Gioh: when she draws red flowers to restore Ganryu's stamina, interrupt her with an Oni bow shot to the neck. After her 'Smash him flat, Gioh!' callout, the tentacles turn purple and new attacks appear — and the white-glow flurry she buffs onto Ganryu's blade can end the fight in one exchange on Carnage, where two hits will kill you.
Minamoto no Yoshitsune (8.5/10) is the final boss and, by a wide margin, the hardest and longest fight in the game. Phase one demands distance-aware answers to his white-glow three-hit combo, with the shoulder-tap telegraphing a thrust you must parry. Phase two is fully armored: only deflects drain his posture, ordinary attacks do nothing. Phase three is damageable only inside your own Oni Awakening state — which is exactly why the consumable loadout below exists.
Loadouts
Recommended builds for every stage of the run
For the final boss specifically, ration the consumables: hold everything until the second half of phase two and all of phase three, where they matter most. Sun-Dried Hozuki is the only item capped at one — it restores three Hozuki charges — so spend it at the moment it changes the fight, not when it is merely convenient.
| Scenario | Loadout |
|---|---|
| First playthrough (Action) | Maxed Charm of the Healer, Charm of Protection, Fencer's Strength + default Hozuki Pouch |
| Carnage second run | Maxed Charm of Awakening, Oni Power, Fencer's Strength + default Hozuki Pouch |
| Yoshitsune consumables (Carnage) | Heavy Restorative x2, Amulet of Introspection x2, Stimulant x2, Sun-Dried Hozuki x1 (capped at 1), Greater Defense Talisman x2, Greater Might Talisman x2 |

What is the hardest boss in the game?
Minamoto no Yoshitsune, the final boss — PowerPyx rates him 8.5/10, well above the second-hardest, Sasaki Ganryu (Altered) at 7/10. He has three phases and is damageable in phase three only during your own Oni Awakening.
